Using penicillin as starting material, GCLE was a new intermediate for synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics. It was the main material for synthesis of the Third and Fourth generation cephalosporin antibiotics. It can be used to produce more than 20 kinds of cephalosporin antibiotics such as Cefixime, Cefdinir, Cefpodoxime Proxetil, Cefditoren pivoxil and Cefprozil. There are more than 60% cephalosporin products synthesized by 7-ACA, which can be replaced by GCLE. Furthermore, if using GCLE as intermediate in synthesis, the Recovery Yield will be higher, process will be simpler, the synthesis condition will be milder and the cost will be cheaper. Especially, using GCLE as intermediate in the synthesis of the third generation cephalosporin antibiotics such as Cefixime, cefdinir, has tremendous advantage over using 7-ACA. It can be used as material for synthesis new cephalosporin antibiotics that cannot produced by traditional intermediate like 7ACA and 7ADCA.
